What is AI visibility, and why does it matter for a UK SME?

AI visibility is whether tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini mention your business by name when a customer asks for a recommendation in your category. It matters because these tools increasingly replace the search results page: a customer who asks “who should I hire to run my ads in Bristol” now gets a direct answer, not a list of ten links to click through and if you’re not in that answer, you don’t exist to that customer.

Traditional SEO optimises for a results page. AI visibility sometimes called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) or AI Search Optimization (AISO) optimises for being the answer itself. The two overlap heavily but aren’t identical: a business can rank #1 on Google and still be invisible in ChatGPT, because the two systems weigh different signals.

Why can a business rank well on Google but not appear in AI answers?

AI engines rely more heavily on third-party corroboration than a business’s own website. Independent research consistently finds that the large majority of AI citations come from earned or third-party sources rather than company-owned pages; Rampiq’s AI Visibility Optimization Program found roughly 85% of citations for broad category queries come from third-party sources, and Muck Rack’s analysis of over one million AI prompts found more than 85% of non-paid AI citations originate from earned media, not brand websites.

In practice this means your Google reviews, directory listings, press mentions, and forum answers often matter more to an AI engine’s recommendation than the copy on your homepage. A site can be technically excellent and still be left out of AI answers if it has no independent footprint.

Do different AI engines behave the same way?

No. Each engine has a distinct citation pattern, and a business visible in one can be completely absent from another; Averi’s analysis of 680 million AI citations found only around 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity, meaning a single-engine strategy leaves most of the market uncovered.

Rough behavioural differences worth knowing:

  • Google AI Overviews function as an extension of classic SEO: schema markup, page structure, and organic ranking strength carry over, with meaningful overlap between AI Overview sources and the traditional top-20 organic results.
  • Perplexity leans heavily on real-time web retrieval and community platforms, particularly Reddit, and updates fastest when new content goes live.
  • ChatGPT favours consensus sources: encyclopaedic entries, authoritative media, and pages with clear factual structure.
  • Claude tends toward depth: well-structured, evidence-dense technical or explanatory content with transparent sourcing, over marketing copy.

What can a small business actually do about this?

Three things move the needle fastest: fixing on-site technical basics (schema, crawlable HTML, an llms.txt file), rewriting key pages so each section stands alone as a directly quotable answer, and the highest-leverage move, building a genuine footprint on third-party platforms AI engines already trust (Google Business Profile, review platforms, relevant community forums, press).

Broken down by effort and typical payoff:

Fast, low-effort wins (days):

  • Add an llms.txt file to your site root, a plain-text index of your key pages and what they cover, aimed specifically at AI crawlers.
  • Confirm your robots.txt doesn’t block AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended), many businesses block these by accident via default security plugin settings.
  • Add or verify Organization and FAQPage schema (JSON-LD) so AI systems can read your identity and answers as structured data rather than having to infer them from prose.
  • Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile.

Medium-effort, on-site (weeks):

  • Rewrite your top 5-10 pages so each major section opens with a self-contained 40-80 word answer, followed by supporting detail, write for extraction, not just for reading top-to-bottom.
  • Replace vague claims (“we deliver great results”) with specific, checkable facts: named outcomes, real numbers, dates, certifications.
  • Keep your name, address, and phone number (NAP) identical across every page and platform, AI systems resolve a business as a single entity partly by matching these details consistently; inconsistency (two addresses, duplicate URLs for the same page) actively works against you.

Higher-effort, off-site (months, biggest long-term payoff):

  • Build out review volume on Google, Trustpilot, and any relevant B2B directory (Clutch, G2 if applicable), AI engines cite these disproportionately.
  • Participate genuinely in relevant Reddit and Quora threads over time, a rushed, promotional approach tends to get accounts banned; sustained, useful answers build the trust that eventually gets cited.
  • Pursue a small number of credible press or industry-publication mentions rather than a large volume of low-quality backlinks.
  • Once there’s enough independent coverage to support it, a Wikidata entry (and eventually a Wikipedia page) anchors your identity for engines that lean on encyclopaedic sources.

How do I know if my business currently shows up at all?

The only reliable way to know is to ask the AI engines directly, using the same phrasing a real customer would use, and record what comes back because AI answers vary by exact wording, location, and time, a single check isn’t enough; you need a structured set of prompts run across each major engine and repeated periodically.

A basic version you can run yourself: open ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google (to trigger an AI Overview), and Gemini in separate tabs, and ask each the same 5-10 realistic buyer questions for your category and area (e.g. “who are good [your service] providers in [your city]”, “best [your service] company for a small business”).

Note whether you’re mentioned, where you rank relative to competitors, and which third-party pages get cited, that citation list becomes your off-site priority list, since it shows exactly which platforms the AI already trusts for your category.

What should I avoid?

Avoid mass-producing AI-generated content across many pages purely to increase volume, both Google and the AI engines themselves have gotten measurably better at discounting or de-indexing thin, templated AI content, and it damages trust rather than building it.

The credible approach documented across markets that have professionalised this practice fastest is the opposite of volume: fewer pages, each backed by real facts, reviewed by a person, and written to be genuinely useful to the person asking, not engineered to game a specific algorithm.

FAQ's

What is AI visibility / GEO?

AI visibility (also called Generative Engine Optimization or AI Search Optimization) is the practice of making a business more likely to be mentioned, recommended, or cited by AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini when someone asks a relevant question.

Is AI visibility different from SEO?

They overlap but aren't the same. SEO targets a search results page of links; AI visibility targets being included in a direct, synthesised answer. A business can rank well on Google and still be absent from AI-generated answers.

What's the single highest-impact thing a small business can do?

Build genuine third-party presence: reviews, directory listings, and relevant community participation. Since independent research finds the large majority of AI citations come from third-party sources rather than a company's own website.

How often should I check my AI visibility?

At minimum quarterly, since AI models update frequently and answers can shift with wording, location, and time. Businesses actively managing this tend to check monthly against a fixed set of buyer-style prompts.

Can I do this myself, or do I need an agency?

The fast technical wins (schema, llms.txt, robots.txt, Google Business Profile) are doable in-house with basic WordPress or web access. Off-site authority building and ongoing multi-engine monitoring are more time-intensive and are where most businesses bring in outside help.
